HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) is a sexually transmitted infection that can occur in the genitals (cervix, anus, penis), external genitals, and some areas of the throat and mouth. The HPV vaccine (Gardasil) is a highly effective vaccine in preventing infections with HPV strains. This is especially effective when administered prior to onset of sexual activity.
It helps protect against certain types of HPV that can cause several serious health issues such as cervical, anal, or esophageal cancers. It can also protect against strains of genital warts.
Studies have shown that the HPV vaccine provides long-term protection against HPV-related diseases, which is crucial for long-term health and wellbeing. Widespread vaccination also helps reduce the overall prevalence of these diseases in the population, contributing to better public health.
The vaccine is recommended for preteens (both boys and girls) around ages 11 or 12, but it can also be given to older teens and adults who haven't been vaccinated.
Yes. While the vaccine is most effective when administered prior to onset of sexual activity, the vaccine is still beneficial for adults as the vaccine can still offer protection against HPV strains that you have not been exposed to, reducing the risk of HPV-related cancers and genital warts.
The vaccine is recommended in BC to adult women ages 19-45, adult men ages 19-26, or adult men ages 26 and above who have sex with other men.
