Like the flu, meningococcal meningitis is transmitted from person to person through close, direct contact, such as coughing or sneezing, or by sharing items that come into contact with saliva.
If you are participating in the Hajj or Umrah pilgrimage, you must have received your vaccination against meningococcal meningitis within the last 3 years and at least 10 days prior to your arrival.
Certain travel situations can increase your risk of contracting the disease. This is especially true when traveling to areas where the disease is more common, such as the sub-Saharan African meningitis belt, or when taking part in large gatherings like the Hajj or Umrah. For instance, in 2000, a meningococcal disease outbreak in Saudi Arabia associated with the Hajj resulted in 70 deaths, with an overall attack rate of 15 cases per 100,000 Hajj pilgrims.
