Shingles, or herpes zoster, is caused by the same virus that causes chickenpox, characterized by a painful rash and nerve pain. The shingles vaccine is recommended for most adults over 50 years old, even if they've had shingles before or have received the older shingles vaccine (Zostavax). It is even more important to get the vaccine if a person previously had chickenpox as the same virus reactivates later in life as shingles.

Aside from prevention of shingles, the vaccine is important for several other reasons:

  • Reduction in Severity: If you do get shingles despite being vaccinated, the vaccine can help reduce the severity and duration of the illness.
  • Prevention of Complications: Shingles can lead to complications such as postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), which is severe, persistent nerve pain that can last for months or even years after the rash has healed. The vaccine helps lower the risk of developing PHN.
  • Protecting Others: Although the shingles vaccine primarily protects the individual who receives it, reducing the incidence of shingles can also lower the risk of spreading the varicella-zoster virus to others, including those who have not had chickenpox or who are at higher risk for severe complications.
